| Caroline Creighton was the daughter of the Earl of Erne,, Lady Wharncliffe, moved in powerful circles. Her grandfather was the Earl of Bristol and her husband, James Stuart, Baron Wharncliffe, became an MP his grandfather had been Prime Minister. An account of her life, drawing heavily upon her letters, is given in The First Lady Wharncliffe and her Family in London 1927, written by two of her grandchildren, Caroline Grosvenor and Charles Beilby, Lord Stuart of Wortley. Lady Caroline's grandfather assembled a great art collection, including works by Claude and Correggio. Her mother was involved in the picture buying. Her interest in the collection is documented in The First Lady Wharncliffe as having pleased her grandfather, who professed his delight that she had resumed her drawing under such good auspices. In her letters. Lady Caroline wrote about sketching along with her other pastimes, feeding her bantam chickens, singing, playing the guitar and spinning. The artist also loved the theater. |
