J. W. Waterhouse: Garden of Enchantment

October 1st, 2009 to February 7th, 2010

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts: 1380 Sherbrooke Street West
, Quebec, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

 J. W. Waterhouse: Garden of Enchantment This is the first major international exhibition on John William Waterhouse (1849-1917), an artist associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, who aimed to recapture the beauty and simplicity of the medieval world. He was also a classical painter inspired by literature and Greek mythology. This retrospective will show how Waterhouse's paintings reflect his engagement with contemporary issues like medievalism, classical heritage, spiritualism and the New Woman. His images belie a Romantic fascination with heightened female passions. Captivated by myths of enchantresses, Waterhouse created a distinctive kind of female beauty; his subjects include the Lady of Shalott, Ophelia, Mariana, Cleopatra and La Belle Dame Sans Merci.

Comprising some eighty paintings, this first major retrospective will also feature many of the artist's studies in chalk and pencil. Several of these works have not been exhibited since Waterhouse's lifetime.

J. W. Waterhouse: The Modern Pre-Raphaelite has been organized by the Groninger Museum, the Netherlands with the collaboration of the Royal Academy of Arts, London and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
