The Karen B. Cohen collection of drawings and painted sketches compels our admiration: not only for its quality and variety, but also for the enduringly passionate commitment required to track down so many works from New York. Nor is its focus restricted to the most obvious facets of the artist's genius : the entire gamut is covered, from the large-leaf sketchbooks and the copies of Raphael and Rubens to the preliminaries for the big decorative murals ; from religious subjects to illustrations inspired by the work of Shakespeare and George Sand ; and from combats between wild animals to flamboyant Moroccan scenes. Out of this broad panorama of the artist's career emerges a kind of imaginary museum.
The collection's ultimate destination is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where Karen B. Cohen is an Honorary Trustee. For the moment, however, these ninety carefully chosen works are being shown as a preview in the painter's Paris home, where they can be compared with additional pieces borrowed from the Louvre and other public collections in France.
