Biography
| Bronzino was famed for his portraits of Florentine nobility and for the way he imbued his sitters with an air of assured confidence. He worked mainly in Florence as court painter to Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who appreciated the theatricality of Bronzino's vision and commissioned works that reflected his interest in myth and visual puzzles. Quoting from Michelangelo and Raphael, Bronzino contorts his figures, with their elegant necks and long fingers, into impossible poses. His portraits have been criticized for exuding a chilling arrogance, but should also be seen in terms of the type of beauty explored in his mannered allegories and religious works. |
