Biography
| Al Safi studied sculpture at the Fine Arts Academy in Baghdad. He's known for his bronze figures, all of which are positioned to fly or leap, or instead rest in a delicate balance on seemingly unstable forms. Thin silhouettes sneak across the negative space striving for higher ground or an invisible landscape, always in constant movement. Scenes include motifs from agrarian life indicating the freedom for which he seeks. Living through a time of political dictatorship and social repression in Iraq, his sculptures seem to mirror the emotions of the people as well. His drawings evoke a dark, mesopotamian fantasy where tragedy and tranquility abound. The crescent symbol finds itself in much of his work connoting the origins of Iraqi land as the fertile crescent. He has lived and created in France since 2005. |
