Biography
| Also known as a curator, architect and publisher, Ai Weiwei produces art with an obvious design influence. His work ranges from the humorous (for example, the Study of Perspective series) to slick design objects (such as Divina Proportion, 2007). Many of his pieces deal with the ideas of value and the changing of ascetics over time with the "updating" of antiques, such as inscribing Coca-Cola" on an ancient urn (Han Dynasty Urn With Coca-Cola Logo, 1994). Weiwei has also become known for his compassion for both human and animal suffering along side his ability to bring art into the realm of social consciousness. He continues to both live and work in Beijing, China, addressing a number of social issues. A recent project brought to light a government cover up which lead to school buildings collapsing and killing 5,335 students, which then caused his personal blog to be shut down. To this day, he still has a passion to change what is happening in China. |
