Biography
Ivanov was a Russian painter educated at the St. Petersburg Academy. In 1830, a scholarship took him through Germany to Rome, where he stayed until 1857, giving most of his time to preparing one major painting, Christ Appearing to the People. It generated much discourse and is now in the Tretyakov Museum in Moscow. He was in touch with the Nazarenes and influenced by their attention to detail, like them he worked with missionary zeal. He began planning and finding sponsorship for a worldwide network of temples to all the religions as a step towards universal brotherhood.
