Alexander Cozens was one of the most famous drawing master of his day and one of the founders of the romantic landscape tradition. Born in Russia,The artist died London April 23rd 1786. He had some experience in Vernet's studio in Rome before settling in England for good in 1746. Although he made a few studies in oils on the lines of his blot technique for watercolours, only one oil landscape (1756) has been recorded.
