Biography
| Born 1823 in Montpellier, France, Alexandre Cabanel went to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux-Artes in 1840. In 1844, Cabanel held his first exhibition in the Paris Salon, and later grew very involved in its functions including its rejection of the Impressionists. Cabanel died in 1889 at the age of 65. Cabanel was highly successful as a painter in the Academic style in his time, being a favorite artist of Napoleon III and recipient of many state commissions. He is best known for his historical and allegorical paintings in addition to portraiture. His most well known works include The Birth of Venus, Nymph and Satyr, and Ophelia. |
