Biography
Alice cling was Born in an Arizona Hogan, the artist was taught pot making by her mother, Rose Williams turn, this innovative artist had been trained by her aunt, Grace Barlow. In large part, this three generational triad have been the inspiration for Navajo potters seeking to answer the demands of today's market. It should be remembered that, for hundreds of years, Navajo clay work was made for domestic and,or ceremonial use only.
While emulating the elegant, gracefully austere forms of yesteryear, Cling's unusual aesthetic contribution to the renaissance of traditional Navajo potter is the awesome coloration she achieves.Developing her own techniques through trial and error, the chemical interactions of clay, fire and ash produce a distinctive red orange purple brown black veneer.
Cling's pots are usually undecorated except for the natural pigmentation produced by the interactive dynamics of clay and fire. |
