Biography
| Italian history and portrait painter. Born in Civitavecchia in 1700.The artist died in Rome September 7th 1784. Pupil at Rome of Trevisani his first public work there was 1735, but he had then already been made a Cavaliere by Frederick William of Prussia. Spent some months in Paris on his way to London where he remained from 1741 to 1766. His sale before his return to Rome was 1766. He painted a set of full length fancy ancestors portraits for Holkham, and gave an Adoration of the Kings, 1748 to the chapel of the Foundling Hospital. He won premiums for history pictures at the Society of Arts 1760 and 1766. Exhibited SA 1760 and, from Rome, 1775 FS 1761 and from Rome 1769. He painted a number of decorative chiaroscuros and had a considerable vogue painting mythologies or historical subjects, notably for Alderman Beckford at Fonthill House, when come some ceilings now at Dyrham, and Edward and Elfrida and Gunhilda,1760 at Burton Constable. Six very large historical pictures were in the sale at Wanstead House. Casali also made etchings after some of his own designs. |
