Biography
Antonio da Correggio spent most of his career painting religious subjects, he is best known today for his erotically charged mythologies. These are sadly few in number due to the lack of court patronage at Parma, where Correggio was living at the height of his success in the 1520s.After his return to his native town of Correggio in the 1530s, he worked on his last series of mythological paintings for Frederick II, Duke of Mantua, including the wonderfully sensuous Jupiter. As images of abandoned sexual pleasure,In his use of smokey, softened edges, he was influenced by the sfumato blending technique of Leonardo da Vinci, who was working in northern Italy during Correggio's formative years. However, his paintings feel timeless, as if they could comfortably belong to the eighteenth century, a period in which he was greatly admired by rococo artists. The best place to see Correggio's work on a grand scale is in the city of Parma, where he was engaged in two major religious commissions to paint the ceilings of San Giovanni Evangelista and Parma Cathedral with large illusionistic frescoes. His religious paintings almost anticipate the baroque style in their energy and ecstatic quality. In smaller scale devotional paintings, Correggio depicts tender scenes of a young and timid Virgin Mary sharing intimate moments with her baby son. Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Correggio's name was held in high regard, along with Raphael and Titian. An evidently intelligent and highly educated painter, the sweetness of his work can, for some people, be a barrier to the poetry and beauty of his painted images.
