Biography
| Brauer studied from 1945 to 1951 with Albert Paris Gutersloh in the Akademie der Kunste plastics in Vienna, where his colleagues included Ernst Fuchs, Wolfgang Hutter (b 1928) and Anton Lehmden (b 1929), with who helped develop the style known as Phantastischer realismus. The first place he exhibited his works with the art-Club of the Zedlitzhalle. In 1950, he cycled from Vienna to Paris, also travel to Spain, North Africa, Israel and Yemen. During this period he struggled to earn a living as a folk singer. Since 1958, he has lived and worked as an artist in Paris, but from 1964 divides his time between Vienna and the house had decorated himself in Ein Hod, a village artists in Israel. Brauers paintings were strongly influenced first by the peasants paintings of Pieter Bruegel I in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and then by the work of Hieronymus Bosch; Brauer developed a anecdotal style, mainly depicting rustic landscape genre scenes. After 1955, after a visit to Israel, he was interested in Persian and Indian miniatures; its influence presented orientalizing elements and bright colors in his work. Brauer often used Jewish and Old Testament traditions as the basis of their works, which show a fairy tale world, as it is true of its portfolio of color aquatints. He also designed scenarios and was a success as a singer. |
