Biography
| An uninspired, academic painter, Houbraken deserves mention as one of the most important sources of information on Dutch seventeenth-century painting. At age nine he began his studies with Hohan de Haenatage; in 1672 he worked with Willem van Drienleburgh and afterward with Jacob Levecq. He was a pupil of Samuel van Hoogstraeten in 1674 until the lalter's death in 1678, during which time Hoogstraeten was writing his Inleyding tot de Hoog Schoole de Schilderkonst, published in 1678. That work probably inspired Houbraken to produce his own three-volume work, De ff-oote Schouburgh der Nederlandtsche KonstschUders en SchUderessen (1718- 21). Houbraken was a member of the Dordrecht Guild of St. Luke in 1668 and probably remained there until 1709. In 1710 he became a citizen of Amsterdam, where he stayed for the rest of his life except for a nine-month visit to England. |
