MIAMI BEACH, FL - Widely considered to be the most important contemporary art show in the US, Art Basel Miami opens tomorrow in Miami Beach, Florida. http://www.artbaselmiamibeach.com/go/id/ss/lang/eng/ . The show will run from December 3 - December 6, 2009.
Artists, collectors, curators and the glamorous people that surround the art world will converge upon the beach for the eighth edition of the Swiss-born festival. Precarious economic conditions haven't seemed to have soured the event. There will be twenty percent more exhibition space, and nearly double the exhibitors. At the same time prices are down by approximately twenty percent for the second year in a row. The Miami Herald quotes event co-director Mark Spielgler as saying, ``It's a fantastic time for people who are serious about collecting art. Prices are more negotiable, though not as negotiable as some people would like. What we saw at Art Basel [in Switzerland] was that a lot of people who had been looking at work for a while finally pounced. The important thing to remember is that many of the greatest collections of today were built by people who started collecting seriously at moments when others were being cautious.''
The Art Basel Festival began forty years ago in Basel Switzerland .
