Biography
Arthur Garfield Dove was an early American modernist, and one of America's first abstract painters. Dove used a wide range of media, sometimes in unconventional combinations. Dove did a series of experimental collage works in the 1920s. He also experimented with techniques, combining paints like hand mixed oil or tempera over a wax emulsion. The pigments from the paint then bond to the wax molecules. Dove produced a group of collages and assemblages because it was cheaper than paint.
