| Florentine painter whose work blends Florentine and Sienese traditions (see also Giotti, Duccio, Simone Martini, the Lorenzetti) characterized as a large-scale painter, Daddi is widely known for his small portable tabernacles. A form pioneered by Duccio but popularized my Daddi which met the growing personal needs of devotion by the urban middle-class. The earliest known example was created in 1335 and is located in the Bigallo, Florence. One of the finest is in London (1338, Courtauld), but there are others in Europe and American museums. All of these show workshop participation. Orcagna's tabernacle in the guild church or San Michele, Florence, preserves a Virgin and Child by Daddi (1346). |
