Biography
| Brett Whiteley, is considered to be one of the best Australian painters of the 20th century. In his youth, he traveled to London on a scholarship from the Italian government where there was a large interest in Australian art at the time. After being included in a group show, 'Survey of Recent Australian Painting,' the Tate gallery purchased one of his pieces. He was then the youngest artist to ever have his work bought by the Tate which brought him even more success. In 1967, he went to study in New York on another scholarship. During this time, he was heavily influenced by the other artist and musicians at the Chelsea Hotel as well as the peace movement. After being refused by Marlborough-Gerson's gallery, he left New York for Fiji. He continued to experiment with different styles and traveled during the rest of life. However, in his later years he became addicted to heroin and died of an overdose in 1992. |
