Biography
Swedish portrait painter. Born Stockholm 16 August 1759; died there 1 December 1818. Trained as portrait and history painter at Stockholm under Lorenz Pasch, where he won prizes in 1780. He had painted members of the Swedish royal family before coming to London in 1787. Exh. RA 1788-96, when he returned to Stockholm and became court painter, professor at the Academy and the leading portraitist in Sweden. In England he was much influenced by Reynolds (q.v.). His most interesting English portraits were those of the Lunar Society, done in Birmingham 1792/3, e.g.
'James Watt' (NPG), and 'William Withering' (Stockholm).
