Biography
| Now considered one of the most significant Florentine painters of the first half of the century, Cecco Bravo nevertheless remains a relatively obscure and little-studied figure. Called a pupil of Biliverti and Rosselli (from the basis of his early style), Bravo responded to Sarto, Pontormo, and the Venetians, developing a mature style which in its painterly bravura and somewhat dreamy, agitated construction is at once visionary and personal. His approach has affinity with that of Francesco Furini and Sebastiano Mazzoni (a Venetian), with whom his work is sometimes confused. Bravo's expressive style seems confined to his easel and cabinet "mythologies." His surviving oeuvre (though relatively small) also includes a number of fresco cycles, executed in a tighter, more controlled manner, in which the influence of Sarto and Pontormo are particularly evident. Among his earliest large-scale mural cycles is his portrayal of the life of Beato Bonaventura for SS. Annunziata, Pistoia, of 1633. These reflect his understanding of Giovanni da San Giovanni, while his contributions to the Sala degli Argenti, Lorenzo il Magnifico Listening to Apollo among the Muses (dated 1639) have much in common with the work of Volterrano. |
