| Born in Antwerp in 1540, Denijs Calvaert was a Flemish Mannerist painter who spent most of his life in Bologna, Italy, where he was known as Il Fiammingo. In 1527, Calvaert went to Rome to paint in the papal palace as the assistant of Lorenzo Sabbatini. Afterward, Calvaert returned to Bologna where he lived until his death in 1619. Perhaps his greatest influence, however, was his role as an early teacher to a group of influential painters of the Bologna school, including Guido Reni and Giovanni Battista Bertusio, and Francesco Albani. His most important work is considered to be St. Michael (Church of St. Peter's, Bologna). |
