Biography
Jarman studied stage design at the Slade School of Art in London. He was well-known as a painter in the late 1960s and as a set designer mainly through working for the filmmaker Ken Russell. His first forays into film relied on the super-8mm camera. Jarman is known for his outspoken personal struggle with AIDS and his unending fight for gay rights. His work Sebastiane from 1976 was perhaps the first British film to feature positive images of gay sexuality. His films ranged from Caravaggio and The Tempest, based on the life and work of the painter and on Shakespeare's play, to Blue , an abstract narrative about the daily uncertainties of living with AIDS. He wrote poetry and books reflecting on his work. He continued to paint until his death despite his failing eyesight due to AIDS related illness.
