Biography
| In 1943, Braund studied at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and committed herself to five year diploma in the National Gallery School of Victoria (1944-9) with the modernism Alan Sumner (b 1911). Braund also studied privately with George Bell. In her last year, Braund won awards for drawing the Figure and painting a Still Life, who were tried by Constance Stokes. Braund traveled in Europe and in England between 1950-51 and was taken by classic beauty in art, ancient or modern, especially Etruscan art. Later, she traveled regularly to Europe and Asia. Braund painted in oil and gouache, with the main theme of the human figure. Since her figure compositions became a simplified and summarize, simplification is the essence of Braunds aesthetic. Composition elements are kept in tension by finely observed relations of color, form and the pitch and often unusual prospects. Her works are human, ingenious and rhythmic, with items taken from the beach, boating, playing fields, social occasions and travel observations. Braund has approximately 20 solo exhibitions, the majority in Melbourne. She has also shown in Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide. Braund has worked in arts education, education in Melbourne schools (1952-75), giving talks on ABC radio (1961-4) and revise childrens books for the Australian (1969-77). Braund has also received the 1962 Albury Art, the Prize 1964 Colac, the Prize 1966 Bendigo Art Prize and the 1972 Muswellbrook Art Prize. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, Queensland art gallery, Brisbane, Monash and La Trobe University collections, Melbourne and regional galleries. |
