Biography
| Garvey was a landscape painter. He studied in Rome and was first in London before 1764. He exhibited FS 1767-68 and 1779, RA 1769-1808. He won premiums from the SA 1769 and 1771. ARA 1770 RA (for no fathomable reason) 1783. He practised at Bath, where he was friendly with Gainsborough, 1768-78, when he settled in London. He exhibited conventional views of many European scenes, but need not have visited them, though he was again in Rome in 1798. He also sometimes returned to Ireland and painted Irish views. His landscapes are profoundly ordinary and monotonous in color and his appointment as RA, against Wright of Derby, puzzled many contemporaries. Garvey seems to have been a good natured man. |
