Biography
| Edwards was a painter of all manner of subjects. He was born in London on March 7th 1738. He was a son of a cabinet maker and first apprenticed to continue the family tradtion. He studied painting at the Duke of Richmond's Academy, the St. Martin's Lane Academy in 1761, and also RA Schools in 1769. The artist exhibited FS 1766, SA 1767-72, RA very abundantly in 1771-1806. ARA 1773 and Teacher of Perspective at RA from 1788. He visited France and Italy 1775. Although he had aspirations towards history painting, his only such commission was for a single picture for Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. His portraits were adequate but pedestrian. He also attempted decorative and scene painting. The artist died in London on December 10th 1806. He is best remembered for his Anecdotes of Painters, which appeared posthumously in 1808. |
