Biography
| Portrait painter in oils and crayons, and in England under the pseudonym of E.F.Calze.The artist was born of a good Jacobite family at Kelso.The artist was Taken to Italy by his father.He trained at Parma, Rome Mengs and Batoni, and Naples, and active in Venice and Paris. Brought to England by Lord Lyttelton and had some success as a portrait painter. The artist Exhibited RA 1770 to 1773 as when several of his portraits were engraved in mezzotint by V. Green. He left the country in a hurry and travelled to Prussia and St. Petersburg. It is not clear if he was also F. Calza, il Bolognese who exhibited crayons, portraits and histories RA 1777 to 1781. By 1784 he was court painter at Berlin and he is said to have died there April 28th 1793, though Redgrave says he died in poverty in London, 1795. Court portraits exist in Berlin. His pictures are peculiar in colour and coarse in execution. |
