Biography
| Born Florence Neumegen, this British painter had trained at the Westminster School of Art and the Slade during the 1890s. She painted figure studies with titles such as Breton Woman Knitting and French Peasant, and had begun to exhibit at the Royal Academy. Following her marriage in 1902, however, Florence Engelbach stopped painting for many years. The catalogue essay of her memorial exhibition, held at the Leicester Galleries, London in 1951, described her as a fine example, to those numerous women who, starting on an artistic career, marry and allow domestic life to crush all their early ideals and so be buried in a hum drum existence. The artist restarted painting in 1931, and from then, until the time of her death she painted as one inspired. |
