I was just watching Anthony Bourdain in french polynesia. This is where Gauguin found a lot of inspiration and I totally understood why after I saw the footage from Bourdain's show. It seems like such a magical place. It's a lot different now than it was back when Gauguin was there, but they still hold some of the same traditions. It's unfortunate that ethnocentrism has left it's impression on such a rich culture. I wish, as I'm sure Gauguin would agree, that we could leave native populations to continue their culture uninhibited by the bible, the white man, and self-proclaimed "decency". All this makes me enjoy Gauguin's art so much more!

This should be in the Post-impressionist section...

I'm glad that you brought up Anthony Bourdain! I love his show. I would have to disagree though--I'm not denying that Gaughin adored the Polynesians, but I think that his perceptions of the women are ethnocentric and demeaning. He always presented them like nude, anonymous objects.

anytime I am drawing, I try to draw men. I hate how the woman's figure is used soooo much to the point of degradation. Not that the woman's form isn't beautiful (because, of course we are ;) ) but i make a point to draw men for that very reason.
