So I've noticed a trend while doing my under-grad that a lot of students don't like to put full effort into their projects, they treat them just as homework. Why do you all think that students put more effort into their work for school? Isn't the purpose of paying thousands of dollars for school to help you develop your craft and prepare you for the real world? Wouldn't it be more beneficial to try and really create something meaningful and/or interesting as opposed to simply fulfilling the requirements? Do those types of people really "make it" in the end?

I wonder this ALL of the time! My peers seem to procrastinate on school projects and throw together "art" that they are not proud of and that means absolutely nothing to them. I agree fully that students need to take advantage of their education because it is crucial in developing necessary skills. I'm learning SO much from my studio classes and put as much effort into them as I possibly can, so it's definitely beneficial!

Like you, I'm also wondering if those people actually make it as artists later on in life!

I feel this way too! Some students just don't care to try. They just want to do their own thing and don't want any direction...a lot of people disrespect the art school system but simply feel like they need that university degree!

Exactly! Most art students I know have that uncomformist "I don't care about school because I'm an artist" attitude, while others embrace the learning experience. I feel like the latter is more beneficial, but maybe that's just me. :)
