View Full Version : For those of you with tattoos...
Do your tattoos have symbolic meaning to them? Did you draw or design your tattoos? Tattoos are taboo, some like them and some dont. Do you think it will make a difference to get a tattoo if it has meaning behind it as opposed to just walking inside a parlor and getting a pin-up girl on your calf? What are your thoughts?

Well, I have three tattoos and yes they all have some sort of symbolic meaning. The first one I got was the one on my hip and it says, "Que sera, sera.." meaning what will be will be in spanish. I got this because it is the motto i like to live by, and I am spanish. I walked into the parlor with an idea in my head, and had the artist draw it up how I had it envisioned in my head. Although this tattoo was more of a spur of the moment decision, I am very satisfied with it and feel that it is a constant reminder of how I should approach life. The second tattoo I had done was on my foot and it has the date my uncle passed away with a halo above it to symbolize him being my guardian angel. This tattoo was drawn up by an artist in the tattoo parlor and was actually very different than the drawings I brought to him. I was very happy with the changes he made and get a lot of questions about that tattoo to this very day. The third tattoo I did a lot of research on and printed out a picture I found online. It is a cross with rosary beads and I made a few small changes to it before brining it to the tattoo parlor on my birthday. This one is on my ribs and by far my favorite.

I am what most would call heavily tattooed. My tattoos dont really mean anything in the sense of it symbolises meaning in my life. What I think is important when it comes to a tattoo is to pick the artist based on style that goes along with the vision of the tattoo you have in your head. If you want to prepare a sketch or bring in refrence to the artist thats always a good thing because that will give the artist a window into what your thinking. But I wouldnt try to draw it completly because lets face facts if youre picking your artist correctly they will be able to draw you something thats gonna be better then what your abilities are at least in designing a good tattoo. Dont be afraid to wait either. Alot of good tattooers are going to have a waiting list, not all but some. Also listen to your artist when he tells you what will work and what wont because once again this is their job. You wouldnt tell your dentist how to do your root canal. So if you do your research, pick your artist, your image and work with them on a design then in the long run it will mean something to you.

I have many tattoos. they all have some sort of symbolic meaning to me, some more than others. I think ones that relate to you in some way are more significant than "That looks cool, I want that!" tattoos.

I have a few planned. "Gaia" by Alex Grey, just the tree though, around my thigh. Album art from Caliban's The Opposite From Within, some game art, and possibly a few others. I recently got a penguin with angel wings with my best friend's name underneath for my bestie who passed away.
