Post-Impressionism is the term to describe the development of French art since the impressionists. Post-Impressionists extended Impressionism by using vivid colors, thick application of paint, distinctive brushstrokes and real-life subject matter, but they were more inclined to emphasize geometric forms, to distort form for expressive effect, and to use unnatural or arbitrary color.
From the French word fauve, meaning "wild beast." A style adopted by artists associated with Matisse, Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, and Georges Seurat, who painted in a spontaneous manner, using bold colors.
