Thread: When does Modern Architecture die?

  1. Default When does Modern Architecture die?

I mean, what will todays modern architecture be called in the future? And what makes it modern?

Well 'modern' is a very subjective term so its hard to look at things using that phrase. Everything, at one point at least, began as modern but you'd be surprised to know just how long that term can stick to artistic styles. The Impressionist movement, for example is still considered modern by today's standards so it can last for a while!

Modern art is defined as Art created from1900 to the mid twentieth century by artists who veered away from tradional techniques and used different skills than the artists of the renaissance.

Do you feel that modern architecture fall under a similar category?

Modernism is generally considered a 20th century movement. It is confused with the word contemporary because its meaning is similar. The period following Modernism is known as the Post-Modern period, which has been seen as an extension of Modern themes. It has no precise start date, but deals with a more self-reflexive understanding of art. It could, for example, be said that Duchamp's Dadaist Fountain, 1917 (a signed urinal) was a postmodern piece although it belonged to the Dada movement. The term is highly controversial, but a good resource for more information is Jean-François Lyotard's Towards the Postmodern and The Postmodern Condition. Oxford University Press has also put out an essay by Christopher Butler for their introduction series called Postmodernism: A Very Short Introduction. Check it out!

I agree with Anna, modernism has a time period, now a days most new buildings or homes that use a lot of the principles of modernism are considered contemporary. An example of where I feel architecture is leaning towards now is organic contemporary forms is Santiago Calatrava's turning torso in Malmo,Sweden. Its a high end residential structure and uses the human torso is a form for creating the structure. it is amazing and one of my personal favorites. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Th...rso,_Malmo.JPG

I think until a new style is developed then it is considered to be modern architecture.

Agreed. Architecture keeps on changing because of time.
