511 GALLERY Gallery Intern Position for Spring 2010 (New York, NY)


511 Gallery and 511 Projects are curatorial-based operations that propose and install exhibitions both nationally and abroad, in addition to exhibiting contemporary work in both its Chelsea and Lake Placid venues. 511 Gallery specializes in showing and selling contemporary and modern art, and works in tandem with 511 Projects to curate exhibitions in a variety of locations, such as art fairs, museums, galleries, and non-profit spaces. We represent sixteen contemporary artists, many of them internationally-based, who work in all media. The gallery's mission is to place its artists' work, as well as its BackRoom of 19th and 20th Century artworks, in public collections.

We are seeking interns for our by-appointment gallery in the Chelsea Mercantile to assist the Manager with these curatorial projects, as well as the day-to-day operations of our gallery. A candidate must have a strong interest in contemporary art, as well as the secondary market of earlier artworks; an interest in writing and proposing curatorial projects; and strong communication and writing skills.

An ideal candidate will be efficient, proactive, a creative thinker, highly organized, and possess the ability to prioritize tasks while working on several projects simultaneously. Knowledge of PCs, including applications such as Word, Excel, Photoshop, is preferred. Additional responsibilities include working directly with artists, updating inventory, and handling the logistics of artwork.
