As the most recognized Dutch painter of the 15th century, it has been suggested that Geertgen tot Sint Jans studied with Albert Ouwater which is where he learned the naturalistic style of Van Eyck. His work is mainly associate with landscapes and nocturnal lighting effects, which is evident in the two panels he painted for the Knights of St John in Haarlem as part of a triptych.
