Biography
| Painter of literary genre and histories. Baptised Colchester 10 April 1737, buried Hendon September 19th 1794. Began life as an unsuccessful shop assistant. He First taught himself painting and entered RA Schools in 1770. Exh. SA 1772-74 scenes of rustic genre and illustrations to The Sentimental journey (one engr. by Valentine Green 1774). Set out with Copley in August 1774 for Rome via Paris. His 'Wounded Hussar', RA 1775, sent from Rome, also engr. by Valentine Green. Exh. RA 1775-79 (in 1778 an altarpiece for St. James's, Colchester) and then not until 1784, when he showed 'The Apotheosis of Garrick' (Stratford on Avon). His visits to Gibraltar and St. Petersburg presumably took place between 1779 and 1783. In 1785 he held a pretentious private exhibition of thirty-five 'history' pictures in London (Edwards, 235-238), which included the 'Siege of Gibraltar', 1784 (NPG), 'The Death of Captain Cook', 1781 and a Morlandish 'Children's Games (from Shenstone)' 1785 (both ex Lord Crawford). These are curiously clumsy but show some attempted rivalry with Copley, and Carter had some success with engravings after these and genre pictures by J. Jones, J.R. Smith. He was in Calcutta 1786 to 1788 and continued to paint scenes from Indian history. |
