Biography
| Mainly an animal painter and sculptor, George Garrard had considerable gifts for portrait, landscape, and urban scenes. Born 31 May 1760, the artist died in Brompton on October 8th 1826. He was a pupil of Sawrey Gilpin, whose daughter he married. The artist entered RA Schools in 1778. He exhibited in the Royal Acadamy in 1783-1826 BI 1806-25. ARA 1800. He was an abundant exhibitor, at first of pictures of horses and dogs, but expanding his field to scenes in which animals and agricultural life were prominent. From about 1795 he more or less deserted painting for sculpture, modelling expecially animals and reliefs Gunnis. His occasional pictures of a brewhouse or an equestrian portrait on a small scale are of very high quality. The brewing family of Whitbread were good patrons, as was the Duke of Bedford. |
