Panini specialized in depicting celebrated views of Roman architecture and ruins. He depicted real topography as well as imaginary views. He was one of the vedutisti or 'view painters' of the early 18th century. His reputation was establishedwith his fresco decorations of the Villa Patrizi and in the Quirinal Palace. He was commissioned by Cardinal de Polignac for a series of paintings recording celebrations on the birth of the heir to the French throne in 1729. He taught in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca and the Academie de France, where he influenced Jean-Honore Fragonard.
