Biography
| In Venice in 1697, Giovanni Antonio Canal was born to a painter father Bernardo Canal, and received his early artistic training as a theatrical scene painter under his father. After studying under various masters, however, Canal quickly became established as a traditional painter. As a landscape painter, Canal often painted directly from nature rather than consulting studies in the studio, resulting in the blurring of fine detail in the distance, which some see as an early example of Impressionist influences. Canal's early works are often considered to be his best, and his most famous piece, the Stonemason's Yard, which depicts a relatively unremarkable neighborhood of Venice, was completed in 1729. After a period, however, Canal realized that producing a series of repetitive scenes of popular icons of Venice was much more lucrative than selling original individual pieces. He subsequently reorganized his studio to churn out quick Venetian scenes for English tourists. This brought Canal to England in 1746 to be closer to his British customers, but the quality of his paintings steadily decreased and his popularity waned. Canal returned to Venice in 1763 where he continued painting landscapes until he died in 1768. |
