Biography
| Hendrik de Clerck was one of the most talented exponents of Flemish mannerism, Hendrick de Clerck deserves to be better known. Thought to be a pupil of Maerten de Vos, Hendrick became court painter to Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella in 1606. His skill at figure painting was in demand by such artists as Denis van Alsloot, Hendrik van Balen, Jan Brueghel I, Jacques d'Arthois, Joos de Momper, and others. Hendrick promoted his teacher's style throughout his career. There are affinities in his work with the mannerist printmaker Jacques Bellange. In Hendrick's Descent from the Cross signed and dated, 1628, Brussels, Musees Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, his forcefully delineated muscular figures are a perfect foil for the emotional intensity of the subject matter. Strangely abstracted, the figures are nevertheless charged with feeling. Clearly de Clerck's sumptuous, decorative style was ideally suited for his aristocratic patrons. |
