Biography
| French emigre portrait painter. Born Paris 24 February 1753; died there 3 January 1809. He was a friend of Vien and accompanied him to Rome, where he remained till 1780 and acquired a portrait style somewhat reminiscent of Madame Vige"e- Lebrun. Later settled at Lyon and fled from the Revolution to London January 1791, returning to Paris late in 1800. He took some trouble to meet British painters and admired Romney above the others, and he had a number of British sitters. He exh. RA 1792-96 and 1800 (always portraits except for a figure of 'Calypso'), but he did also paint genre and history. In 1796 he visited Scotland where he had some success and painted an accomplished group (signed and dated 1798) of 'The family of the 3rd Duke of Buccleuch' and an ambitious portrait of 'Admiral Viscount Duncan' (small replica in NPG). His English Diary is a valuable source of information about the French emigre world (Roger Portalis, H-P.D, et son journal durant Vemigration, Paris, 1910). Danloux did not meet with much success after his return to Paris. |
