Biography
| Herrad of Lansberg was a nun of the 12th century who is the author of the Hortus deliciarum or the "Garden of Delights." She was born at the castle of Landsberg, from a wealthy Alsatian family. She became apart of the Hohenburg Abbey as a young teen. She began her work on the pictorial encyclopedia in 1165, which was her best known work that was about science, theology, philosophy, and literature. Most of the images are historical, but some are depiction of her sisters in religion. The style of the book was typical of the time period. The original manuscript was burned in the fire of the Library of Strasbourg during the Franco-Prussian War. |
