The Golden Age of Russian Impressionism

The Hidden World of Soviet Impressionists : 1940-1960 : The Kohn Collection

Elena Kohn (Author, Photographer), Oriana Parker (Editor), Professor Anthony Lacy Gully (Preface), David Tooker (West Valley Art Museum) (Preface)

This book provides extraordinary glimpses of peasant and middle-class life behind the Iron Curtain. The paintings were created during the Soviet regime, often in secret, by leading Russian artists. Thanks to Elena Kohn's father, the historically important works were not destroyed during the empire's collapse. He protected the collection by sending the threatened paintings to his daughter in Arizona, giving America the opportunity to see and study a unique side of Russian art. Painted by artists whose creations hang in St. Petersburg's famed Hermitage Museum, the Kohn Collection encompasses 200 works by more than 150 artists from this period Praised by such national publications and have been exhibited at museums in both the South and the West.

To accompany an exhibit of the Kohn Collection at Arizona's West Valley Art Museum, Elena wrote "The Hidden World of Russian Impressionism: The Soviet Era 1940-1960." Much of the material was drawn from documentation created by her father, who curated the paintings in Russia. Since the author was among the last students educated under the Soviet regime, invaluable insights regarding this truly unique education system is another highlight of the book. According to David Tooker of the West Valley Art Museum, "The insight she provides into the Soviet art instruction is truly unique as well as totally fascinating." An important contribution to works focusing on Russian Impressionism, the book is divided into five chapters: 1) Art Defined by History 2) Impressionist Parallels: Russia Develops An Unique Interpretation 3) Artistic Education in the Former Soviet Union 4) Secrets of Russian Impressionism of the Soviet Era and 5) Materials and Technology.
