Biography
| Irish-born landscape painter of classical pretensions. He was married in Cork 1761; died in London c. 1784. He met Lord Palmerston at Chepstow, 1765, who became his patron and paid for his journey to Italy, In Rome 1768-79, with some time spent in Florence, where he became a member of the Academy, 1776. Exh. FS 1765; SA 1766-80; RA 1777, 1779, and 1780, always landscapes. Early views on the Elbe and Danube, 1768, do not necessarily require a visit. He was one of those glib Irishmen, who got himself nicknamed 'the Irish Claude', and was a devoted imitator of Gaspard Poussin. In 1780 he also opened a 'transparent representation of the eruption of Vesuvius' as a side show, but when this venture failed to get him patronage he turned Methodist preacher. |
