Biography
Ivan (Jean) Albertovitch Pougny was the son of a violoncellist, and grandson of the Italian composer Cesar Pouny. He studied under I.E. Repin, and in various studios in Paris, as well as the Academy Julien. During 1911-1912 he traveled to Italy. One of the authors of the manifesto "Suprematism" (1915-1916). He began exhibiting his work in 1912. He was a member of the unions and groups "The Union of Youth" (1912-1913), "Knave of Diamonds" (1916-1917), "4 arts" (1928). He was also one of the organizers and participants of the exhibitions "Tramvay V" (1915) и "0,10" (1915-1916). Taught in the Petrograd State Free Art Educational Workshops (1918), in 1919 - in the Higher State Artistic and Technical Workshops in Vitebsk with M.Z. Shagal. Lived and worked in Petersburg-Petrograd, Vitebsk, since 1919 - abroad: Finland, Berlin, and Paris. Was on friendly terms with F. Leger, A. Marke, J. Severny, A. Ozanfan. In 1947 became a member of the Legion of Honor. Died in Paris.
