| Jacob van Oost the Elder was born in Bruges, Belgium in 1601. He spent most of his life there, with the exception of a few years when he studied in Italy under Annibale Carracci. While in Italy, he became inspired by the works of Caravaggio, and well as fellow Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens. Jacob van Oost is best known for his religious narratives and portraiture which were created in a very naturalistic manner. His figures encompass the classical style of his teacher, Carracci, and use the palate and naturalism of Caravaggio and Rubens. |
