Biography
A significant Flemish Caravaggist, Jacob van Oost has an extensive surviving oeuve that shows his absorption of many other influences as well. He was the founding member of a school of painters that included his sons, Jacob the Younger (1639-1713) and Willem (1651-1686). Jacob the Elder was the brother and pupil (in 1619) of Frans van Oost. Jacob became a master in Bruges in 1621 and in 1633 became dean of the Bruges Guild. Sometime between 1621 and 1629 Jacob was in Italy, where he absorbed Caravaggio's* influence via his followers. Jacob was back in Bruges by 1629 and enjoyed a very successful career there. Jacob's Caravaggism lasted through the 1630s and 40s, while his later work also responded to Venetian painting and Dutch realist tendencies. Jacob's earliest dated painting is the Adoration (dated 1630, St. Petersburg, Hermitage), which reflects some of the realism of Louis Le Nain.* Paintings such as the Calling ofSt. Matthew (signed and dated 1640, Bruges, Notre Dame) are still placed within a Caravaggist orbit. Another picture recently given to van Oost is the Christ at Emmaus in the same church. Here, too, there is an element of Dutch influence - the painting includes group portraits not typically found in Caravaggist treatment of the subject. Contact with the Utrecht School has been suggested. Many of Jacob's portraits have a surprisingly Dutch flavor, as has been pointed out with respect to his Family on a Terrace (dated 1645, Bruges, Musee Municipal des Beaux-Arts), which clearly echoes the work of Bartholomeus van der Heist* and Gerard Ter Borch.
