Biography
| Italian history and decorative painter who also painted portraits. Born c. 1682, apparently at Naples, but his parents were Venetian and he calls himself a Venetian in his will; died Madrid 22 August 1752. He was trained as a rococo decorative and history painter in Venice and worked in England 1729-39. He first specialized in large decorative histories and mythological subjects, which he painted on canvas (rather than in fresco) to be mounted as wall paintings: this was an innovation. The best surviving series in situ is the 'Story of Jupiter and Io', c. 1732 (Moor Park). Not finding full employment in these, he took to portraiture and was patronized by Queen Caroline and other members of the royal family. His full lengths especially have a fine rococo air and are often diversified with Cupids (for drawings related to his English portraits, see Elaine Claye, Master Drawings, XII 1974, 41-48). He married in England (1738) and attempted, with Joseph Wagner, to set up a print shop, but they both returned to Venice 1739. From 1747 Amigoni was court painter in Spain. In England he also did some work as a scene painter. |
