Biography
Born in Empoli, Tuscany, Italy as Jacopo Chimenti, he was a Florentine painter. After Santi di Tito, he was the leader of the Flortentine reaction against the cold Mannerism of Vasari deliberately returning to the values of the Florentine High Renaissance. He became an excellent forger of Andrea del Sarto , Fra Bartolommeo, and Pontormo. He taught Felice Ficherelli. His independent works are known for clarity, strong color, forms of monumental simplicity allied to an interest in naturalistic gesture, and detail of costume and setting. In addition to his forceful alterpieces, he created stilllifes and portraits of distinction.
