Biography
| Although Siberechts is considered a Flemish painter, his landscape style is considered Dutch, adopting the Italianate manner of Jan Asselijn, Jan Both, and Carel Dujardin. In his mature style, dated to around 1660, Siberechts developed a characteristic cool palette and specialized in scenes of peasants and country people fording streams with their cattle and carts. One of his best-known examples is A Cowherd Passing a Horse and Cart in a Stream (signed and dated 1658?, London, National Gallery). Jan was born to a sculptor father and was baptized in Antwerp in January 1627. His teacher is unknown. In 1648/9 Jan registered with the Antwerp St. Luke's Guild as a master. Some scholars suggest that he was in Italy before then. Jan married in Antwerp in 1652, remaining in his hometown until at least 1672, when he probably moved to England. He was most likely called to London by the second duke of Buckingham, who traveled through Flanders on his way home from a mission in Paris in 1672. Jan was documented in London in 1687, where he was actively producing views of English country estates, an undertaking which must have demanded considerable travel. Jan's Antwerp period concentrated largely on landscapes with peasants and farm people; his English production involved mostly the views of country estates. An occasional religious work and some interiors are also known. Some 100 paintings have been identified by scholars, many of which are signed and dated, the last date being 1698. His English period is thought to have contributed to the later development of English landscape painting. |
