Biography
| Jaume Huguet worked in Barcelona in the fifteenth century when the Catalan Gothic style reached its pinnacle. The leading artist in the region at the time, he is famed for producing ornate altarpieces notable for their fine use of gold leaf and stucco, vivid use of color, complex composition, and fluidity of line. Perhaps Huguet is most notable for the expressive characterization he brought to the figures he portrayed, which made them sympathetic to the onlooker and promoted compassion. For example, his depiction of the Last Supper (c.1470) shows Christ staring out at the viewer, giving the sign of blessing with his right hand to the onlooker. Jesus is present at the table but apart in his divinity, and surrounded by the disciples, whose faces each appear to have been based on individual, observed portraits. Born in Vails, after the death of his father Huguet moved to the provincial capital, Tarragona, to live with his uncle, painter Pere Huguet. Later, in Barcelona, he encountered the work of Bernat Martorell before moving again to work in Zaragoza and Tarragona, where he absorbed the Flemish style of Luis Dalmau and its attention to detail. When he returned to Barcelona in 1454, Huguet began to produce his greatest works, such as the panels for the Altarpiece of Saint Michael and Saint Stephen or of the Retailers (c. 1455-1460), Saint George and the Princess (c.1459-1475), and The Consecration of Saint Augustine. Altarpiece of Saint Augustine or of the Tanners (c.1466-1475). The elegant and refined altarpieces he produced in his workshop proved influential for ecclesiastical Flemish and Italian styles to produce a distinct Catalan Gothic style. |
